Critically evaluate how the negative impacts of converging technology will be minimised within the proposed campaign
Within this report, I will be critically evaluating how my proposed product will minimise the negative impacts of converging technology. I will discuss the possible negative effects the consistent use of my product could have on my target audience and other consumers. Furthermore, I will explain how I plan to avoid or prevent creating these negative effects for the benefit and health of my customers. In addition, I will mention the key problems my product might have on society as well as talk about some key passive audience theory and how my product could prove them. I will explain how we are going to counteract the in my product before concluding.
In 1947, Adorno and Horkheimer created the hypodermic syringe theory a type of passive audience theory which implies that media has a negative effect. A part of this theory states how mass audiences believe everything they see or hear as a part of culture industry and automatically believe it to be the truth and fact. An example of where this could apply to my proposed product is if consumers start to self diagnose themselves with actual mental health disorders for example clinical or social anxiety when they are just experiencing normal emotions. This will give a bad reputation to those actually suffering and will make them more scared to talk about it as they are experiencing the actual mental health disorder. To prevent this issue we will give a warning statement saying how people who are seriously thinking they have a problem with their mental health should go to a therapist or their GP. By giving the consumers alternate options of where they can go for further assistance we are preventing the idea of the users automatically believing the media and to ensure the backing of a professional from the industry before sprouting false information.
Another passive audience theory was created in 1972 by Stanley Cohen called the moral panic theory. The moral panic theory states the instances of when the mass public concern or panic in response to a media product which threatens groups of people with discrimination or questions the morals of society. An example of this within my product is social media and communication. A lot of parents and the older generation have a fear of technology and specifically social media as they claim it has a negative effect on their children. In some ways, this can be proven true because social media can lead to low self esteem and create negative relationships between people. Some mobile apps have to regulate this when there is access to social media through your product in options to share it as a post or send messages. To avoid this from happening and as well as keeping to the main message and purpose of my product, my product doesn't include any form of communication possible for the consumers. By limiting their access through not including any form of social media or messaging, the users have a lesser chance of getting a low self esteem or comparing themselves and their own progress to other people. Instead they can focus on their own mental health and ignore other people in the time they spend on my product.
Some other key problems which are usually a concern when creating a product like mine is any possibilities for online trolling or cyberbullying. However, as my product blocks communication, there isn't a chance for this to happen between people using my product effectively counteracting the possible negative effect. Along with this, the lack of communication also counteracts and prevents the negative effect of becoming antisocial. This is because with no way to communicate while using my product, the consumers will want to socially interact with other people in real life as they don't spend the energy interacting with people online. Due to the choice to block forms of communication in my product, I have prevented the negative effects of cyberbullying, trolling and becoming anti social.
In conclusion, I have discussed how my proposed product has planned to prevent the negative effects created by the media through proving various passive audience theories. Furthermore, I have explained why my product contains some features to help benefit the consumers' own health and the other advantages which can come along with these. Throughout this report I have also mentioned numerous key problems within society surrounding converging technologies.
